Písek - The monument of the year 2013 became the Church of Saint Catherine in Štramberk in the Moravian-Silesian Region. The Association of Historical Sites of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia recognized its restoration in the first year of the competition during the opening of the conference in Písek today. The commission was impressed by the exemplary symbiosis of the valuable monument's use after restoration, combining spiritual activities with other societal uses. Ivana Popelová, the chairwoman of the association, told ČTK this. The Church of Saint Catherine, with a roof and enclosing wall covered with shingles, stands on an elevated bank of the Sedlnice River along the road from Štramberk to Nový Jičín. The church itself is a late Gothic structure from the turn of the 14th to 15th century with a rectangular chancel and nave. Since 1935, the small church had been deteriorating. The total costs of the repairs from 2011 to 2012 amounted to nearly five million crowns, of which 92.5 percent was subsidized by the EU. Representatives from nearly two hundred towns and municipalities that care for heritage reserves or heritage zones gathered in Písek for the 24th conference of the association. This year's meeting, themed "Monuments Without Barriers," is primarily intended for representatives of local self-governments and employees of expert organizations involved in addressing accessibility, barrier-free access, and the presentation of monuments.
