Ústí nad Labem - Heritage conservationists want the former hospital building from the 1930s to be preserved in the developing university campus in Ústí nad Labem. However, according to the site manager, it is in a state of emergency, which is why conservationists were not allowed inside. The university plans to demolish Pavilion A and replace it with a new building, but the Ministry of Culture has initiated proceedings to declare it a cultural monument. A decision is expected by the end of May. "In the immediate vicinity of Pavilion A, new university buildings are under construction, and referring to this fact, the site manager did not allow heritage workers to enter the building's interior, making it impossible to properly assess its current technical condition," writes the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) in its report on the proposal submitted to the Ministry by the association 400/27, which deals with Ústí's monuments. The original design of the six-story building completed in 1937 was by the Ústí municipal architects Franz Josef Arnold and Ernst Krob. "Arnold's and Krob's reconstruction of the Ústí hospital is among the advanced architectural achievements that responded to contemporary trends in foreign architecture and influenced the development of architecture in Czech territory through their typological and aesthetic solutions," stated NPÚ in the report. The only university in the Ústí region argues primarily from an economic standpoint. The Ministry of Education promised it a grant for demolition and new construction, but it would not receive a single koruna for reconstruction. According to its bursar Jana Janáková, 65 million korunas reserved for the university in 2012 are at risk, as are 590 million korunas for the construction of a new facility that the Ministry of Education had planned to finance by 2015. The entire campus, covering about 90,000 square meters, was originally estimated to cost 2.9 billion korunas. According to participants in today's university management meeting, the reconstructed spaces of Pavilion A could not be utilized by the university because their layout would not be sufficient for the planned laboratories and teaching spaces for the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Production Technologies, and the Faculty of the Environment. Architects advocating for the preservation of the building propose an extension. "If the university lacks 3,000 square meters of usable space, it can be addressed in other ways than through the drastic demolition of an existing valuable building," write architects Jiří Němeček and Jan Vaca in a statement. The university management today referred to the proposal's authors as "terrorists" obstructing the development of the institution with seven faculties and 11,000 students. "We do not want to impede the university's development, but at the same time, as Ústí patriots and residents of one of the most socially and historically affected regions, we cannot ignore the destructive approach towards one of the most valuable Ústí monuments from a time when this city was at its peak," defend the proponents of the proposal. The campus already houses the Faculty of Social and Economic Studies, the Faculty of Production Technologies and Management, the Faculty of Applied Arts and Design, part of the Faculty of Science, and the Central Library of the Faculty of Education. The Multi-Functional Information Center and the University Library for 420 million korunas are set to be completed in September, and the renovation of two more buildings for 150 million korunas is also to begin.
