Ostrava - Ostrava is finalizing the preparations for the construction of a community center that should provide comprehensive residential and outpatient services for people with severe physical and combined disabilities. There is currently a lack of such facilities in the region, said Jiří Hudec from the economic development department of the Ostrava city hall to reporters today. The construction is planned to start next year, and it could be completed in 2012. The estimated total costs for the project are nearly 157 million crowns. The city would like to obtain approximately 126 million crowns through the Regional Operational Program from the European Union. However, there is little money allocated for similar projects in this area, and there is a risk that the city will not succeed for this reason. Ostrava is therefore currently trying to negotiate with the region to increase the total volume of subsidies for this area so that it has a chance to secure the necessary funding. The newly built Community Center is set to be established near the Benátky forest park in the Mariánské Hory and Hulváky city district. Its total capacity will be 54 clients. It will not only offer permanent accommodation for 18 people but also respite services for a maximum of six individuals. These beds can be used by people who permanently care for their relatives but need to be away for a few days, for example. The complex will also include a day center, which will have a gym and spaces for rehabilitation. The project of the Community Center has been discussed in the city for several years. The original plan included linking the world of the disabled with the lives of seniors, and the complex would also feature a nursing home. However, due to the high costs of building such a complex, the city has stepped back from its original plans.
