Trutnov - This year, the Trutnov town hall is investing approximately 1.4 million crowns into the restoration of the remains of the former synagogue. The work began in early October and should be completed by the end of November, said the town hall spokesperson Michaela Dědková to ČTK today. This is the first phase of the restoration of the remains of the synagogue on Na Struze Street. Next year, the second phase is expected to address the furnishings and final adjustments of the space. "This year, the main construction work, terrain modifications, and the removal of neglected greenery are planned. The remains will be stabilized and new greenery will be planted," said Dědková to ČTK.
In the first phase, the outline of the building will also be formed from stones, and the original staircase to the synagogue will be restored. "The site will be accessible to the public from spring next year. The second phase, which should cost a maximum of 100,000 crowns, will take place during operation and is planned for next year," said Dědková to ČTK.
The second phase includes the installation of public lighting, benches, information boards, and the placement of a granite monument in another modified location.
Only the foundations of the synagogue have survived, which have become overgrown over time. Twenty years ago, the town had basic modifications made to the area and placed a granite monument commemorating the synagogue. Since then, the area has once again become overgrown. "The synagogue stood under the forest park next to today's special kindergarten. It was burned down during Kristallnacht, and this year marks the 80th anniversary of this terrible event. We decided to create a memorial and dignified place here and preserve it for future generations," stated Mayor Ivan Adamec (ODS).
The synagogue on Na Struze Street was built in the late 1880s and was destroyed in 1938.
