Opava Winter Stadium will acquire a new look for 200 million crowns

Opava – The Opava City Hall is preparing for a large-scale reconstruction of the ice stadium, which will receive a completely new look for 200 million crowns. The building from the 1950s has become dilapidated and is in an unsatisfactory technical condition. Roman Konečný from the press department of the Opava municipality said this today to ČTK. The aim of the project is a modern building that can be used not only for ice sports and recreational activities but also for cultural and social events. Construction could begin as soon as the end of this year, with completion expected in 2022.

"The existing ice stadium, which has long ceased to fulfill its function 100 percent, has over the years become a great embarrassment for Opava. It is an incomprehensible jumble of many modifications, extensions, and reconstructions that no longer work. It does not even provide the basic comfort that players and visitors to the hall expect," said the city mayor Tomáš Navrátil (ANO).

The city has an architectural study that cleans the original historic hall of gradually made additions and allows the original steel structure of the hall to shine. "All original structural elements will instead be preserved to the greatest extent possible and visually emphasized," stated the city's chief architect Petr Stanjura.

New stands for about 2000 spectators are proposed on the original concrete steps of the ice stadium's tribunes. All load-bearing elements will be placed below the level of the seats to avoid obstructing the view of the ice surface and to not affect the appearance of the interior. Architecturally insignificant ancillary buildings attached to the hall from the southwest will be removed and replaced with a new annex including a new restaurant and lounge.

New areas for practicing shooting, stability, skating speed, and starts behind the disc will be created. The space for practicing hockey skills is designed with youth camps in mind. Training needs will be complemented by modern facilities for strength training and a gym. Emphasis is also placed on regeneration, which is intended for all age groups. It includes massage cabins, a Finnish sauna and steam room, a cooling pool, and a relaxation area.

"The revitalization of the complex involves the restoration of the historic hall with an emphasis on the technical industrial quality of the building. Overall, a tranquil and clear space will create the impression of a hockey arena, restoring a sense of grandeur. Part of the ground floor of the hall will be glazed," said Konečný.
