BRNO - Residents of the Brno district of Ivanovice opposed the construction of another hypermarket in their neighborhood in a poll. The public opinion survey was initiated by the local town hall. Mayor Eva Slavíková told ČTK that she would consider the people's opinions in further discussions. The survey for the district was conducted for free by experts from the Department of Environmental Studies at Masaryk University. "121 respondents agreed with the construction while 426 were against it," said Pavel Ehrlich, one of the survey organizers, to ČTK today. People could also express how they would like to utilize the disputed area on the outskirts of Brno. "The most frequent proposals included the construction of family houses, a park, a swimming pool, or a sports complex," Ehrlich stated. It is still unclear whether the will of the town hall and citizens will be enough to halt the construction. "In our opinion, it may slow down the project, but not stop it," said Roman Baur from the development company Fuertes Development, which is organizing the construction preparations. According to information from the Nesehnutí movement, the investor is supposed to be the Bauhaus company, which has not commented on the matter. Nesehnutí has been protesting against the construction from the very beginning. "The enormous structure neither fits in its scale nor its appearance into the local landscape at all. There is a danger of the same kind of landscape devastation that the already existing Globus hypermarket has caused. However, unlike it, the new hypermarket would affect land in the vicinity of the populated and preserved part of Ivanovice," stated Milan Štefanec from Nesehnutí. The district has a rather negative stance towards the hypermarket, even though it would benefit from the construction. The neighborhood has been promised a one-time contribution of 1.6 million crowns from builders, followed by 200,000 crowns each year. On the other hand, according to estimates by the Nesehnutí movement, 3,000 more cars would pass through Ivanovice each day.
