Karlovy Vary - The Karlovy Vary region wants to decide on the future of the building of the secondary school of art and design in Karlovy Vary by the end of this year. In addition to experts, councilors, representatives, and the school director, the public is also likely to be able to comment on it, said regional councilor Jaroslav Bradáč (independent) to ČTK. The costs for any potential repairs, relocation, or demolition of the school are to be assessed by studies commissioned by the region. In mid-July, the Ministry of Culture canceled the heritage protection of the building due to its dilapidated state.

"Now a small working team of representatives from various departments has gathered. It is compiling the conditions for commissioning a competition for the development of volumetric studies on three variants of what we will do with the school next. Based on the outcomes of those studies, the council and the representatives will take a position," said Bradáč. The region wants to publish the results of the studies for broader discussion.

According to the councilor, the region wants to address the future of the art and design school as a whole. Due to its dilapidated state, only one of the buildings is closed, which housed newly equipped laboratories, among other things. However, the school continues to operate in the remaining premises in a makeshift manner, with classrooms needing to be made from some hallways. The school director is currently managing the situation, according to Bradáč, but the current state is unsustainable in the long term. "If any construction modifications are to be made, they must be done as a comprehensive solution so that the school can function with four basic fields. We will also need to resolve the school's operation until some of the solutions can be implemented," said the councilor.

The Ministry of Culture granted the region's request to lift the heritage protection based on an assessment from the Klokner Institute at Czech Technical University. The assessment demonstrated the dilapidated state, especially of the ceiling structures, which the ministry recommended replacing. Due to static disruption, the region closed the building from 1920 in May last year.
