Pardubice - A new elementary school, which is to be built on the site of the former T.G. Masaryk barracks in Pardubice, will be able to teach up to 540 students. The area will fill the southwestern part of the land, where several buildings stand, and half of the current parking lot, with a total area exceeding two hectares. This was reported by ČTK based on a document for the environmental impact assessment process (EIA).

The main entrance to the school will be from Zborovské náměstí through a small park, and there will be a relatively large area partially covered by a canopy in front of the building. The structures are arranged into four interconnected parts for teaching, school administration and the entrance hall, dining, and physical education. All roofs will be covered with maintenance-free greenery. In the center of the teaching area, there will be an outdoor break area, an atrium. The school will have 18 classrooms; the building will include two gymnasiums and a running track with an indoor sports field. The project also counts on 52 parking spaces, of which 38 will be on the school premises and 14 on Pod Břízkami Street. The school grounds will be grassed, planted with mature greenery, trees, and hedges.

The school will serve residents of new apartments that are to be constructed between S.K. Neumann Street and Chrudimka River, as well as for the surrounding neighborhoods of Skřivánek, Višňovka, and Jesničánky. These do have elementary schools within their districts but lack sufficient capacity.

Pardubice will need to demolish seven aging barracks buildings. The city estimates the costs at 110 million crowns. The building permit for the school building could be obtained by the city hall in the first months of 2025.

The cost of building the school was previously estimated at around 500 million crowns excluding VAT. Pardubice would like to obtain a subsidy for the construction that would cover most of the costs.

The T.G. Masaryk barracks have belonged to the city since 2014. The magistrate commissioned a study on their use and considered offering the area to investors. They themselves could build accommodation facilities for seniors with more or less specialized care on the premises. In the past, a private entity also expressed interest in building an elementary church school there. Currently, there is a temporary parking lot in the empty area. The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has long planned to build a new employment office on the land at the edge, which currently operates at several locations across the city.
