Hradec Králové - The new city library in Hradec Králové, which is being built in the former Vertex factory, will open its doors to readers in March next year. The original opening date set for this September has been postponed due to the repetition of the tender for furniture suppliers. This was said today by the mayor's assistant Jindřich Vedlich (TOP 09).
"The building itself has already been approved, and the interiors are now being completed, and I expect that the moving of books will start shortly," said Vedlich. According to the city hall, the delay was caused by the repetition of the tender for the interior supplier. It was also necessary to finalize the furniture documentation and revise the fire assessment of the building. The situation was complicated by the fact that the winner of the repeated tender withdrew, and the city had to begin negotiations with the second-ranked supplier.
Hradec Králové City Library currently has its main headquarters on Tomková Street in the historic center of the city, and books are stored in a warehouse in Staré Nechanice and must be delivered to readers. The construction of the new library, called the Center for Lifelong Learning, will cost approximately 197 million crowns. The city hall has obtained about 137 million crowns in European grants for the construction.
The library, designed by architect and actor David Vávra, will offer better facilities for readers and staff, such as a children's section with a playroom and spaces for an audio library for the blind. More information about the library and the project can be found at www.knihovnahk.cz.
In Hradec Králové, a new regional Study and Research Library was established already in 2008. The construction of the modern building in the shape of the letter X took four years and cost 405 million crowns. In addition to library services, it also offers a conference hall with a capacity of 100 seats, a literary café, and gallery spaces. The library was built in close proximity to two new buildings of the Hradec Králové University.
