Until May 3, 2024, significant personalities can be nominated for the Architect of the Year 2024 and Architect to the Community 2024 awards. The Architect of the Year award is annually awarded to an expert who, over the past five years, has contributed significantly to architecture in the Czech Republic through their inspirational approach. The Architect to the Community award is then received by the person who has made a substantial contribution to the development of one of our settlements. The 16th edition of the Architect of the Year award highlights the creative work of architects and other professionals involved in the creation of quality architecture. It also aims to support civic engagement and education in the field of architecture. The award is primarily intended for practicing architects, but not exclusively. Anyone who strives for a pleasant public space for our daily life through their actions can become a laureate. Therefore, initiators of exceptional projects, authors of buildings, architectural theorists, artists, journalists, and other personalities can be nominated for the award. “We award the Architect of the Year prize to highlight the significant role of architects who shape and influence the quality of the environment for our lives. For over fifteen years, we have successfully recognized outstanding Czech creators. For example, last year, Professor Ivan Kroupa was selected by the expert jury,” explains the award Martin František Přívětivý, the general director and vice-chairman of the board of ABF, a.s., which organizes the competition. The experts nominated for Architect of the Year are always evaluated by a jury consisting of five laureates from previous years (this year they are: Ivan Kroupa, the architect duo Ladislav Kuba and Tomáš Pilař, Petr Stolín, Stanislav Fiala, and Zdeněk Fránek) who will select 3-5 finalists, from whom the winner will be chosen. The jury strives for a comprehensive evaluation of the nominated personality's contribution, whether from the perspective of protecting public interests and societal development, professional and moral integrity, influence on the creation of quality buildings or public spaces and landscapes, the level of expertise of the work, or the application of innovative solutions, etc. On the occasion of the Architect of the Year award ceremony, the Architect to the Community award is also presented, which aims to highlight the importance of cooperation and mutual symbiosis between the architect and the local government in the development of the municipality. The award is given to both the architect and the municipality, i.e., the collaborating tandem that has been consistently dedicated to the conception of the built environment of the municipality and has significantly contributed to quality architecture and sustainable development through their approach. The Architect to the Community competition also supports the role of urban architects and therefore has a direct connection to one of the goals of the Architecture and Building Culture Policy of the Czech Republic, which is to strengthen the role of urban and municipal architects. The nominations for the Architect to the Community 2024 award will be assessed by an expert jury: Radka Vladyková, Union of Towns and Municipalities of the Czech Republic, Josef Morkus, Ministry of Regional Development of the Czech Republic, Jan Kasl, Czech Chamber of Architects, Petr Durdík, Association for Urbanism and Spatial Planning of the Czech Republic, Anna Šlapetová, holder of the Architect to the Community 2023 award, Ivan Ryšavý, magazine Modern Community, and a representative of ABF, a.s.
