The National Gallery Prague, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute, is hosting a mini-symposium on Bauhaus and functionalism on June 14, 2019, at the Trade Fair Palace. This will take place as part of the international festival re:bauhaus, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the legendary school of architecture and design, Bauhaus, at various locations in the Czech Republic and Germany. One of the world's most significant schools of art, design, and architecture celebrates 100 years since its establishment this year. Notable figures of the Bauhaus include Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the architect of the Tugendhat Villa in Brno. On this occasion, the National Gallery Prague is organizing an event that will highlight the influence of the Bauhaus on local authors: “The Mini-Symposium on Bauhaus and Functionalism explores the reception and interpretation of the emergence and flourishing of functionalism in Czechoslovakia during the interwar period and its connections with the Bauhaus in Germany. Lectures and discussions will address, for example, the influence of Karel Teige on the development of the Bauhaus. Teige, a leading theorist of the modernist avant-garde, serves as an exemplary example of a network and mutual contacts due to his pedagogical work at the Bauhaus. The prominent German architect Volker Staab will address the question of the contemporary reception of functionalism and how to deal with the built legacy of modernity within the symposium,” presents the program curator of the Architecture Collection of the NGP, Helena Doudová. The mini-symposium will take place on June 14, 2019, starting at 5:00 PM at the Trade Fair Palace. It will be complemented by the exhibition Virtual Bauhaus, which utilizes virtual reality, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the architecturally unique space of the Desavě building designed by Walter Gropius. The goal of the exhibition, which was premiered by the Goethe Institute to mark the 100th anniversary, is to provide visitors not only with the chance to experience Bauhaus “firsthand,” but also to convey the lasting significance of one of Germany's most important cultural heritage examples with the help of contemporary media.
