Ostrava – Náměstí SNP in the most populous district of Ostrava, Jih, is awaiting a transformation. The area adjacent to the House of Culture Akord currently serves mostly for parking, but in the future, it should become a place for meetings and leisure activities. The transformation is based on an urban study commissioned by the City Atelier of Spatial Planning and Architecture (MAPPA). The reporters were informed today by Deputy Mayor Hana Tichánková (ANO) and MAPPA Director Ondřej Vysloužil. Tichánková anticipates that the redesigned square could be completed within five years.
The transformation will include connecting both sides of the square, building an amphitheater, creating a new park area, and relocating the market. In the future, new buildings, including a parking garage, could also emerge around the square.
"Together with the city district, we have long been monitoring the unsatisfactory condition and problems of this location. The recently completed study brings new solutions for the space, working on connecting both parts of the square and focusing on barrier-free accessibility and relocating parking spaces from the square to the surrounding area," stated Tichánková.
According to her, the goal is to calm the entire area. The design integrates the space, which is currently divided by Čujkovova Street into two parts. The roadway at the level of the square is expected to be raised and have a new surface so that both parts are connected. According to Vysloužil, this will contribute to calming traffic and making pedestrian movement between the two parts of the square safer. "Currently, there are about 50 parking spaces, which will be fully replaced in the area where the market is now. We believe that in such an important square, one of the three main ones in Ostrava-Jih, there should not be a parking lot directly in front of the cultural house," Vysloužil opines.
Only short-term parking spaces will be preserved in front of the House of Culture Akord, and access to the square will be allowed for deliveries and passenger drop-offs. The project also includes the creation of bike paths and strengthening the connection to the nearby Bělský les.
It is also planned to raise the terrain in front of the cultural house, which will allow for barrier-free entrances to the surrounding buildings. The elevated area will additionally provide the opportunity to create an amphitheater that will serve both community events and daily gatherings. The market, currently operating near Náměstí SNP, will be relocated to the square.
The plan also includes planting trees and creating rain gardens. Trees in the central part of the square are expected to form a continuous avenue. In addition to the square, tree lines will be added along Rodimcevova and Čujkovova streets. There are also plans to modify the appearance of the water feature, which will include a statue of Sunbathing.
Vysloužil specified that new buildings, intended for administration, commerce, or services, may arise in the area in the future, complementing the construction to the west of the square. One option for construction is, for instance, the area currently occupied by the market.
The urban study will serve as a basis for the elaboration of project documentation for the reconstruction of the square.
