Brno - People continue to turn to the Public Defender of Rights Anna Šabatová with suggestions regarding restitution; she receives two to three each month. Restitution is also the topic of her press conference today. The so-called restitution point is set to take effect in July, and the Constitutional Court will comment on it on Wednesday.
The public defender will present the topic of restitution for the first time. "Suggestions from this area were particularly typical in the first years of the existence of the ombudsman. As early as 2005, Ombudsman Otakar Motejl expressed surprise that the restitution process had not been completed even after 14 years, but he was convinced that it would now only involve the completion of the most complicated cases," said spokesperson of the office, Iva Hrazdílková, in the invitation to the press conference. According to her, the reality is that people still approach the ombudswoman with suggestions related to restitution.
By July 1, the so-called restitution point is to take place, which means the end of issuing replacement lands for agricultural land expropriated under the communist regime. So far, about 56,000 recognized claims have not been settled, and another 300 cases are awaiting decision, according to the ombudswoman. The restitution point is being addressed by the Constitutional Court, which will announce on Wednesday how it has decided regarding the proposal of a group of senators to annul part of the law on the State Land Office.
