Prague - Two billion crowns could be allocated for the regeneration and business use of unused areas, known as brownfields, from 2017 to 2023. Up to 2000 new jobs could be created in these areas. The government approved the program proposal for the use of brownfields today. The program will focus on the Moravian-Silesian, Ústí, and Karlovy Vary regions and economically troubled areas.

"The aim of the document is primarily to address the structural damage to the economy in these areas caused by the decline of heavy and textile industries and the rationalization of coal mining," states the submission report.

Mayors of municipalities in these regions proposed nearly a thousand potential unused sites and areas with total estimated costs of approximately 14.5 billion crowns. Three-quarters of these are smaller projects, mostly located in built-up parts of municipalities with an estimated area of up to three hectares and anticipated costs of about five to ten million crowns.

"The main goal of the Program is to create a number of smaller business-usable areas and properties that will ultimately generate as many jobs as if we established several large industrial zones," states the submission report. Without the need to build industrial zones on "greenfield" sites, a number of new investment and business opportunities could arise.
