Mnichovo Hradiště - The town hall in Mnichovo Hradiště in the Mladá Boleslav region aims to initiate land-use proceedings this year for the construction of a planned flood protection dike. According to preliminary estimates, it will cost between 60 and 65 million crowns and should protect a part of the city that is annually threatened by the swollen Jizera River. The town intends to obtain subsidies for the construction of the dike from domestic or European sources, said Mayor Jaroslav Myška to ČTK today. "In recent years, the danger from torrential rains and melting snow has manifested itself quite extensively. It causes significant damage to property, whether belonging to the municipality or individual owners," the mayor justified the town's effort to build the dike. Several years ago, the town hall commissioned a professional study that includes plans for the dike's construction. This year, the town hall followed up by commissioning project documentation for the land-use proceedings. According to Myška, this will likely be complicated, as the dike intersects with the properties of numerous private owners. The future dike will also include a road that could additionally relieve the traffic-congested streets in the adjacent historical part of the town. Flood protection constructions are being prepared in several other municipalities and towns in the Central Bohemian Region as well. The region has preliminarily estimated the proposed flood protection measures and relevant studies to cost nearly two billion crowns. Dikes and other measures are being prepared, for example, in Beroun, Mělník, Nymburk, Poděbrady, Benátky nad Jizerou, Zdice, Týnec nad Sázavou, Hořín, Zálezlíce, Štěchovice, and Vestec. Mostly, these projects are being prepared by the state enterprises Povodí Labe and Povodí Vltavy, and the state should cover the costs. For instance, Hořín has been unsuccessfully seeking funds for the construction of the dike since the floods four years ago. This year, it had to build a temporary dike itself, and its future remains uncertain.
