People can buy a sofa by Kaplický for a million crowns

Prague - Since yesterday, people can buy exactly the same sofa that architect and designer Jan Kaplický had made for his London apartment in 2007. It will be produced by a small family company from Hradec Králové. Today, representatives of the Dvorak Sec Contemporary gallery presented the first piece, indistinguishable from the original, which will be exhibited until October 10 as part of the Designblok exhibition.
    The sofa will be sold for 750,000 crowns, in a colored version for nearly a million crowns. The spacious sofa in a circular shape with a table in the middle has backrests on three sides resembling a drop at the moment it divides into two, placed horizontally.
    "When I saw it for the first time in our London apartment, I was absolutely thrilled," said Eliška, the widow of Jan Kaplický, to ČTK. The original was created in the fateful year when Jan Kaplický won the competition for the construction of the Prague National Library, Jan and Eliška got married, and they were furnishing their London apartment. Eliška is very happy that the sofa will be produced and sold. "It shows that it’s not so difficult for something to be created, you just have to want it," added Eliška Kaplický.
    The idea to produce the sofa emerged last year at the Resort Living Company, which obtained the copyright for worldwide sales. Together with the original Kaplický team Future Systems and the Czech design company Design and Co, the company designed the production program. The contract for manufacturing was awarded to the small Czech company Polstrin in a tender.
    The sofa is set to be sold in three basic colors - white, black, and gray. It can also be produced in blue and pink - the colors of Future Systems - but in that case, the price will approach one million crowns. Production will be made only on order for specific clients, and industrial production is not planned.
