Liberec - The Liberec Region is considering the purchase of the Château Hotel Sychrov. It could be converted into a home for the elderly. This is one of the options for addressing the insufficient capacity of beds for seniors in the region. In terms of capacity, the Liberec Region ranks the worst among comparable regions. There is one bed for every 259 residents in homes for the elderly and special regime homes, said Deputy Governor Pavel Svoboda (ČSSD) at today’s council meeting. For comparison, in Pardubice Region there are 161 residents per bed, and in Hradec Králové Region, 177.

"We mapped the options and identified several locations. Since at that time there was information circulating that this hotel is for sale, we also considered this option. We inspected the property and found that with certain construction modifications, it could serve this purpose," added Svoboda. According to him, after modifications, the hotel could have 80 to 88 beds for the elderly. The estimated cost for purchasing the hotel is 68 million crowns, but several tens of millions would also need to be invested in its modifications.

The four-star Château Hotel Sychrov has been for sale for 12 years since its opening. The hotel, with 86 beds, was built on the site of the former Rohan riding school. The construction, architecturally in harmony with the nearby castle, cost more than 152 million crowns, of which 64 million crowns was contributed by the European program supporting tourism services. It was operated for years by the EuroAgentur Hotels & Travel chain, but the hotel has been closed since last autumn. The owner is Regal Estate from the S Group (formerly Syner). The complex is being offered through a tender by Naxos, and interested parties can submit offers until May 3.

However, the purchase and redevelopment of the Sychrov hotel will not resolve the need for beds for the elderly in the Liberec Region. "We are also preparing for the construction of another facility on a greenfield site," said Svoboda. A new home for the elderly with a capacity of around 80 beds is to be created on county land next to the home in Vratislavice nad Nisou. The region is also planning an extension of the Retirement Home in Velké Hamry, where about 45 new places could be created. According to Svoboda, it would also be possible in the future to convert the long-term care facility in Jablonné v Podještědí into a home for the elderly with a capacity of up to 30 beds.
