The Liberec Highlands have a chance for salvation

Liberec - A popular tourist destination, Liberec Hill, has a chance for rescue after many years. Its owners have obtained a building permit for utility networks and can then proceed with the reconstruction of the lookout tower. This is reported in today's edition of Mladá fronta Dnes for the Liberec region.
    The construction of the gas, water, and sewage connections will begin in April, and a part of the forest must give way for it. “It took us three years to get the permit. Without the new connections, we couldn't start doing anything else on the Hill,” said Petr Prade, co-owner of the lookout tower, adding that last year craftsmen increased the electricity capacity.
    The Hill is set to regain not only its original purpose as a tourist destination but also its appearance. “We would like to remove the annex that was insensitively added by the construction company in the seventies,” Prade said.
    Tourists will find a restaurant at the Hill and a few rooms for overnight stays under the roof. The observation deck in the tower will also reopen. “We want it to come alive again. But people shouldn't expect anything grand; we are limited by space. However, various events like weddings or parties should take place here,” Prade added. The observation restaurant with the lookout tower was built in 1901 by Heinrich Liebieg. The projects were developed by a builder from Nuremberg, who used some original materials from demolished medieval houses in Nuremberg in the construction. This created an impression of antiquity. The illusion of a castle was further enhanced by a moat crossed by a bridge and a courtyard surrounded by a wall with gun ports. Until 1966, the building retained its original appearance, but then it underwent an insensitive alteration in architecture. The Hill has been closed to the public for about ten years.
