Brno - The footbridge across the Morava River, which will connect the Moravian Mikulčice and the Slovak Kopčany, will be built by a Slovak company operating under the name Company Footbridge across Morava - Doprastav Stavokov. The construction of the long-planned footbridge is expected to begin in spring, with costs around 60 million crowns, most of which should be covered by European grants. This was stated to journalists by the South Moravian Governor Bohumil Šimek (ANO).

"The supplier is a Slovak company that won the tender because it was the cheapest. We expect that 85 percent of the estimated cost will be covered by the operational program for cross-border cooperation," said Governor Šimek.

The Moravian and Slovak banks of the Morava River will be connected by a 143-meter-long steel footbridge, to which additional paved paths for pedestrians and cyclists and a forest path will be attached. The selected contractor won with a price of 2.33 million euros, which is approximately 60 million crowns. The project is being developed in collaboration between the South Moravian Region and the Trnava Region.

Near Mikulčice in the Břeclav region, towards the Morava River, there is a Slavic fortified settlement with the foundations of a princely palace and stone churches. Visitors can view a permanent archaeological exhibition there. Across the Morava River in Slovakia is the Church of Saint Margita, probably built in the 9th century during the Great Moravian Empire. The footbridge will allow tourists to visit both locations without long detours.

"It is a long-term effort of the South Moravian Region and the Trnava Self-Governing Region to create a cross-border Archaeopark Mikulčice-Kopčany. The footbridge will connect the monuments of the Great Moravian Empire, but also unique nature, including the connection of two national networks of cycle paths," added the governor.

Czechia and Slovakia have proposed the inscription of the Mikulčice-Kopčany area on the UNESCO World Heritage list twice. Both countries have withdrawn the proposal twice. They want to better prepare the documentation for the inscription and evaluate the significance of the latest findings in more detail.
