Jihlava - The Vysočina Region is preparing to build a conference center for 900 million crowns. According to a professional study, a six-story building should be constructed on the land of the former Jihlava barracks of Otakar Jaroš. It will also include offices for regional officials and a planetarium with an observatory. The continuation of the preparation of this project was approved today by the regional council. The construction date has yet to be determined. According to regional councilor Martin Hyský, the construction will also depend on whether the region can obtain European subsidies for the part of the site focused on tourism. In his opinion, the building of the center could then start at the earliest in 2011. The General Health Insurance Company (VZP) has already begun constructing its headquarters in the former barracks. The regional leadership has been considering the establishment of a new regional building for several years. However, the original discussion was about an administrative building costing around 300 million crowns, in which about 250 regional officials could work. The newly planned conference center also anticipates hosting professional and social events. The floors in the center would have a total area of 28,000 square meters. In addition to the administrative part and conference spaces, there will also be underground garages, dining facilities, storage rooms, and areas for commercial use. The approximately four-hectare area of the former barracks was transferred to the region from the army three years ago. The old buildings there have already been demolished. In the long term, several offices are expected to be built in the barracks. VZP started construction of its regional headquarters last month, and the work should be completed by January 2011. It is a four-story building costing around 120 million crowns. The regional headquarters of the insurance company is currently located in inadequate premises in the center of Jihlava. The Czech Social Security Administration has also considered building a new headquarters in the former Jihlava barracks.
