Brno - The South Moravian Region has postponed its decision on the allocation of the first 25 million crowns from a total of 100 million, which is to contribute to Brno for the construction of the Janáček Cultural Center. The construction of a concert hall, which will offer 1,300 seats, is planned for 2020 and 2021. Governor Bohumil Šimek (ANO) told reporters today that he first wants to negotiate with the new leadership of Brno to see if they want to maintain the previous agreement between the city and the region regarding mutual support for various projects. The mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) does not understand the postponement.
The regional council was supposed to discuss the allocation of 25 million crowns from the promised one hundred million support, but they postponed the decision to a further meeting. "We have heard voices from the new coalition that they will not support some of our projects that were agreed upon with the outgoing city leadership. That is why we are waiting for the first meeting with the new leadership to clarify everything," said Šimek.
According to him, this does not mean that the region will not support the construction of the concert hall. "It is up for discussion. However, we had some agreements on what the region would support in the city and what the city would support towards the region. This includes, for instance, the construction of a sports hall for Gymnázium Ludvíka Daňka in Brno," said Šimek.
The city was previously governed by a coalition of ANO, Žít Brno with the support of the Pirates, KDU-ČSL, the Green Party, and TOP 09. It will be replaced by a coalition of ODS, KDU-ČSL, the Pirates, and ČSSD, with ANO entering the opposition. "I don’t understand why the region is postponing support for the Janáček Cultural Center. If the ANO movement approaches all matters this way, it will take a million residents of South Moravia hostage, as the Janáček Cultural Center will serve everyone," said Hladík.
According to him, the city did not relate any support regarding the Janáček Cultural Center to other projects, but will support the construction of the gymnasium hall. "We will negotiate with the region to cooperate. However, the current leadership must still negotiate in the inaugural council, and no one else," added Hladík.
The state is to provide 600 million crowns for the construction of the Janáček Cultural Center, 600 million from the city, and 100 million from the region. There has been talk of a concert hall for many years. Problems could arise from this year's lawsuit against the city, filed by the former architects from the Prague studio M1. The city used different authors, an international design team led by the Pole Tomasz Konior, who, according to M1, did not continue their project, which they claim violated the contract.
