Kolín - On the second attempt, Kolín succeeded in awarding a contract to a company that will repair the facade of the local gymnasium. Preparatory work is expected to begin in June, and the actual construction work will start in July. It could be completed in six months, with costs reaching approximately 11.5 million crowns, said Deputy Mayor Michael Kašpar (Change for Kolín) to reporters today.
According to Kašpar, the gymnasium building is not protected as a monument, but it is a very valuable architectural structure. Just because the building is not monument-protected and is not in a heritage reserve, the costs will be covered by the city’s budget, as it is not possible to utilize a grant.
The repairs will not cover the entire plaster area, but only sections that are in the worst condition. Estimates suggest that 15 to 50 percent of the area will be repaired. Areas with the original facade will be finished with the same new facade, and the bricks will also be sanded and the frescoes restored.
The project also includes chemical analyses of the current plaster and aerial footage from a drone. "It is one of the most visible and interesting buildings in Kolín, so it deserves special care," Kašpar said.
In addition to the facade repair, the gymnasium will also undergo the reconstruction of the old dangerous playground. Kolín has prepared approximately 1.6 million crowns for its repair, and the exact start date of the work is still unknown. The playground will receive a new surface and will accommodate more sports than before. There will also be new nets available for volleyball and handball. The fencing will be expanded, and after the reconstruction, the fence will be present on all sides, as it was previously missing on one side.
