Brno – The water tower in the Brno district of Kohoutovice, which at 30 meters high is an unmistakable landmark in the western part of Brno, underwent a renovation this year costing 13 million CZK. This was stated to reporters today by Kohoutovice councilor Jakub Hruška.

"The project was carried out under special supervision, as it is a crucial source of drinking water for a significant part of the municipality. The absolute rule during construction was that there must be no contamination of the water in the reservoir. The reservoir itself was not subject to repairs; it was its exterior shell," said Hruška.

The repair of the water tower was divided into two parts. In the first, workers removed weathered concrete from the tube, and in the second, the restoration of the structure, including the funnel, took place. This began in February this year and was completed at the end of October.

"If the restoration of the outer sarcophagus had not been carried out to this extent, it is highly likely that the building would have collapsed within ten years," added Hruška. After the repairs, it is expected to serve for at least another 30 years.

Given that the water tower is not a hollow funnel full of water, but instead has a stairwell leading to the top of the structure, the residents of Kohoutovice are considering that it could also serve as a lookout tower.

The tower water tank in Brno-Kohoutovice was built in 1978 according to the design of architect Tomáš Černoušek. Water is supplied to the water tower by a pumping station that is part of the ground water reservoir in Kohoutovice. The structure is a single-chamber tank with a capacity of 700 m³ of drinking water.
