Prague - The project for the new National Library, designed by architect Jan Kaplický, may be relocated from Prague's Letná. The most significant part of the Prague city council, the ODS club, does not want the controversial building in Letná. This information was reported by today's Lidové noviny (LN).
The councilors will vote on the library in January or February of next year. The head of the ODS council club, Pavel Žďárský, claims that he will do everything possible to prevent the construction in Letná. According to him, three-quarters of the members of his club share a similar opinion, and with their numerical superiority, they can override the opposition at any time.
The Civic Democrats are willing to tolerate relocating the construction further from the center of Prague. The general director of the National Library, Vlastimil Ježek, has already halted the preparation for the project's implementation. So far, he has not purchased the land from the city on which the library is supposed to stand, nor has he signed a contract with Kaplický. He is even looking for another location for the construction around Prague, writes LN.
"Culture has become politics. It is a great sadness," Kaplický told LN.
