Dobříš – The Stone Bridge in Dobříš in the Příbram region was declared a monument at the beginning of September, thus definitively averting its demolition. CTK was informed today by Mayor Pavel Svoboda (For Dobříš). The structure is in poor condition, and road workers wanted to demolish it and replace it with a new bridge. The Dobříš Beautification Society disagreed with this and initiated a protest petition, which was supported by local and regional councilors.
The Ministry of Culture conducted a procedure to declare the bridge a monument, which according to Svoboda ended favorably for the town. "For us, this is good news; we also had a petition from citizens who advocated for it. We have a meeting next week with representatives of the region to discuss what can be done about it," said Svoboda.
Representatives of the regional office have previously stated that the repair of the original bridge will be expensive. According to regional councilor Josef Řihák (CSSD), the city could contribute some amount to the costs, but the main burden will fall on the Central Bohemian Region.
According to the petition, the bridge was built around 1830 as a miniature replica of the Charles Bridge in Prague. The chairman of the beautification society, Petr Kadlec, pointed out that this is the last classical stone bridge in Dobříš that has survived to the present day.
The bridge reportedly was created in memory of a tragic event in which a carriage overturned in a ford with bride Maria Anna Kloibrová from Český Krumlov in June 1829, and the girl drowned in the swollen Pilský stream. The construction was financed by her family.
