České Budějovice - The building of the South Bohemian Philharmonic in České Budějovice is set for a complete reconstruction and modernization of the concert hall. The regional council today approved the call for bids for this project. The anticipated costs are 37 million crowns. Radek Šíma from the office of the Governor of the South Bohemian Region told ČTK.
"The concert hall was last reconstructed in 1981 and due to its intensive use is in very poor condition. Moreover, the conditions for visitors no longer meet current standards and expectations for providing quality cultural services in the 21st century," said councilor Antonín Krák (ČSSD).
The reconstruction is expected to begin in July and last until February of next year. Among other things, it includes new air conditioning and ventilation systems. The adjustments include the removal of the side balcony and modifications to the front balcony. "An important element of the reconstruction is the stage, which will receive a new load-bearing structure and flooring. The project also includes the reconstruction of low-voltage systems or the introduction of new elements. Specifically, this involves electrical fire signaling, electronic access control together with an attendance system, a camera system, and electronic security signaling," Krák stated.
The South Bohemian Philharmonic, which is established by the region, is primarily located on Kněžská Street in České Budějovice. It also includes the former St. Anne's Church, where the concert hall of Otakar Jeremiáš with a capacity of 218 seats was built.
A congress center named after Antonín Dvořák - the so-called Ray - was supposed to be built for the philharmonic. However, the project was halted six years ago by the councilors of České Budějovice. The reason was said to be ambiguities concerning the investor, whose project guarantee was not presented. The construction, estimated at two billion crowns, was designed by architect Jan Kaplický, who passed away eleven years ago.
