JIHLAVA - Jihlava may lose another cinema hall. The local sports association Sokol is considering ending the operation of the cinema of the same name on Tolstého Street. Only a strategic partner who would pay for the renovation of the cinema hall and possibly continue its operation could prevent this. This is reported by today’s supplement for Vysočina of the daily Mladá fronta Dnes (MfD). Sokol does not have to subsidize the operation of the cinema, but according to chief Eva Zuzaňáková, they cannot save for the renovation from profits. The cinema hall needs new electrical installations, technological equipment, and seating. Any potential investor would have to coordinate repairs with conservationists. The functionalist building from 1936 is a state-protected work of architect Bohuslav Fuchs, MfD states. If the Sokol members close the cinema, only the municipal cinema Dukla and the cinema hall in the culture house, which is used only by the film club, will remain in Jihlava. A furniture store opened nine years ago in the former Vysočina cinema. The Dukla cinema is supposed to undergo renovation and be transformed into a dual-hall facility with high technical standards. A Documentary Film Center is planned to be established there.
