Jičín - The city of Jičín is preparing the reconstruction and extension of the Václav Čtvrtek Library for approximately 70 million Czech crowns. The library, which is one of the cultural centers of the seventeen-thousand-strong city and the wider region, will gain larger and modern spaces through the renovation and will be fully barrier-free. The construction, according to the design by the Prague studio a1Architects, is expected to last from autumn 2023 until the end of 2025. The city has secured a European grant of 60 million crowns for the investment, said the mayor of the city, Jan Malý (ANO).
The library building on Denis Street, designed by architect Čeňek Musil, dates back to 1924. Originally, it was a Students' House, which was established next to the teachers' institute, today's Husova Elementary School. "The Students' House was meant to serve as a meeting place, and the Václav Čtvrtek Library has taken over this role and maintains it to this day," stated the spokesperson of the city hall, Jan Jireš.
The current spaces are no longer sufficient for the library. "We are organizing more and more events for children and adults. Visitors in the reading room are often cramped, and there is no way to find a space for studying during peak hours," said the library director and councilor Jana Benešová (Association for Jičín). The barrier-free access to the library is temporary, and the first floor with the children's department does not have any. The social facilities are also inadequate.
The reconstruction, which the city has been preparing since 2015, is expected to transform the library into a "living room of the city of Jičín" with comfortable facilities for studying and for actively spending free time.
A major change will take place in the eastern wing of the library, which houses the adult section. Builders are expected to expand it with an extension that will include a gallery, reading room, and lecture hall. The building will be accessible without barriers on all floors, and it will receive an elevator. The renovation should remove moisture from the basements, where the library's collection is stored. The adult section will receive new furniture, and the storage will get new shelves. The library will also newly be able to utilize previously hard-to-access spaces in the attic of the main building.
The city hall is now preparing to announce a tender for a construction company. The exact cost of the reconstruction will emerge from the tender.
