Holice - The Holice Sokolovna could return to its original form from 1913. The society is preparing to demolish the extension from the 1960s. The building designed by architect Otakar Novotný in the spirit of geometric modernism is a cultural monument. ČTK was informed by the mayor of TJ Sokol Holice, Lukáš Horský.

"The extension was rather insensitively attached to the building. It contains restrooms. We intend to demolish it and restore the outer façade of the building,"
he said.

In addition, the Sokol members want to renovate the exercise hall, changing rooms, and replace the electrical installations. They already repaired the bare brick façade in the past and also replaced the windows. "Investments have not been made in the interiors since the 1950s. It is neglected. The structure of the building is in good condition," Horský said.

The significant architect was invited to Holice by philanthropist, Sokol mayor, and doctor Čeněk Zemánek. According to his design, Zemánek, who later also became the mayor of the town, had a house built in the square. At the same time, the Sokol members commissioned Novotný to design the Sokolovna.

The Sokolovna used to have balconies with a playground, which were later demolished due to their poor condition. A sports hall now stands in their place. According to Novotný's designs, municipal baths and a cultural house were also supposed to be built near the Sokolovna. However, these remained just plans as World War I began.

Novotný was a student and collaborator of Jan Kotěra, a promoter of architectural modernism. The exterior of the Sokolovna reflects modest Dutch architecture and discreet elements of Romanesque basilicas. It is made of bare brick and geometric decor.

The Sokol members estimate the cost of the renovation at five million crowns, aiming to obtain four million crowns from subsidies. They applied last year but were unsuccessful. If the Ministry of Education promises them the subsidy, they will start construction work next year.
