Přerov - The historic Michalov park in Přerov is set to undergo an extensive restorative treatment later this year. Experts will fell some of the overaged trees in November, while others will be pruned. In the spring of next year, fifty new trees should be planted here. The costs are estimated to be around one million crowns. The park last underwent a major renovation more than ten years ago, which cost over 30 million crowns.
"During the revitalization, trees identified by a dendrologist will be pruned, but some will also be cut down, and new trees will be planted," said Deputy Mayor Michal Zácha (ODS). "The city has already announced a selection process. We will take advantage of the upcoming vegetation calm for the felling, and we want to start planting in the spring," he added.
According to him, some spruces, oaks, as well as linden and maple trees will be removed due to their poor condition. Another eighty trees are awaiting professional pruning. "Last year, a tree fell in Bayerova Street, near the tennis courts, and some trees in Michalov. A dendrologist is working in the city and the trees are being monitored. That is why we also applied for a grant," added the deputy.
The last major reconstruction of Michalov park was undertaken by the city in 2000 and completed after four years. The reason was that after decades of neglect, the city's recreational area was considerably devastated. At that time, the gazebo, sidewalks, and furniture were also repaired. The park was established at the initiative of the beautification association in 1904. It was created from a former forest according to the plans of the prominent garden architect František Thomayer. Since 1992, the park has been an immovable cultural monument, and since 1994, it has been registered as a significant landscape feature.
