Prague - Overnight, someone removed the graffiti from Charles Bridge. According to spokesperson Barbora Lišková from the Technical Administration of Communications (TSK), no one has yet claimed responsibility for the action. Meanwhile, restorers began cleaning the pillar from the spray-painted inscription on Saturday. They were expected to finish the work by August 15. TSK representatives and heritage conservators will meet on site on Monday morning to determine if any damage was done to the stone during the graffiti removal, Lišková told ČTK. Charles Bridge was sprayed in mid-July by two German youths.

"Restorers worked on site until about five in the afternoon on Saturday, and when they arrived at 10:00 in the morning, it had been removed," Lišková told ČTK. Czech Television reported the removal of the graffiti.

Restorer Jan Mjartan, who is in charge of cleaning Charles Bridge, signed a contract with TSK for the job on Friday. He immediately started working with a colleague on Saturday to remove the inscription using chemical cleaners and a brush.

The inscription, approximately five meters long and two meters high, was spray-painted on the pillar of Charles Bridge by two German youths in mid-July. Following witness reports, police detained them at the scene. The court imposed a one-year probation, a five-year ban from the country, and monetary fines.

Due to the size of the graffiti, the cleaning method had to be approved by heritage conservators from the Prague City Hall and the General Directorate of the National Heritage Institute. A chemical analysis of the sprays used preceded the restoration plan.
