Brno – The Faculty Hospital in Brno can begin preparing for the construction of a new maternity hospital for 1.95 billion korunas. It has received registration from the Ministry of Health for this purpose. Martin Novotný from the ministry's press center stated this in a press release today. The hospital, with 6,000 births per year, is the largest maternity hospital in the country, but it operates at two locations several kilometers apart. One of them is completely inadequate.

The goal of the strategic investment is primarily to merge the separate facilities of Bohunice and Obilní trh into one functional unit. Discussions about a new maternity hospital have been ongoing for years. The former director of the Faculty Hospital Brno, Roman Kraus, who led it for 12 years, advocated for it. At the end of last year, he resigned and will run for the Senate in the Brno district this year for the ODS; since January, the director has been oncologist Jaroslav Štěrba.

"The Gynecological and Obstetric Clinic of FN Brno provides comprehensive regional obstetric, gynecological, oncogynecological, and highly specialized care in the field of perinatal medicine and assisted reproduction and is the dominant provider of this care in the South Moravian Region, however, it is also key within the entire republic," stated Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch (for ANO). He added that the hospital can finally start preparing and subsequently implement the investment. "We have allocated financial resources for the investment," Vojtěch stated.

The Gynecological and Obstetric Clinic is now divided into the Reproductive Medicine Department at Obilní trh and the Adult Medicine Department located in the FN Brno campus in Bohunice, which are about seven kilometers apart. However, both facilities are organizationally and operationally dependent on each other, making their operation complicated and unsustainable in the long term both operationally and in terms of personnel. Additionally, the building at Obilní trh no longer meets modern trends.

The total amount of investment is 1.95 billion korunas, of which 1.365 billion will come from the state budget and 585 million korun from the own resources of the Faculty Hospital Brno. The construction is planned for the years 2023 to 2025.
