Brno - The Faculty Hospital Brno is planning a reconstruction of the psychiatric clinic for half a billion crowns. The building is in very poor technical condition, said hospital spokesperson Pavel Žára to ČTK today. According to him, construction could begin next year, with the work expected to last 28 months. The costs of the project will be covered by the European Union and the Ministry of Health.

The work includes a complete reconstruction of the building and the extension of two parts of the structure. "The reconstruction will take place in three phases while the clinic is in operation. The basic idea of the design was to retain the existing pavilion G as much as possible as it was originally designed, and to expand it with a pair of low-rise structures creating enclosed atriums," said Žára.

According to him, this fully preserves the use of the current building. "After the reconstruction, it will still meet the operational needs and simultaneously create new capacities for improving care," stated Žára. The proposal also incorporates solutions for the temporary placement of selected operations and requirements for the energy efficiency of the buildings. Another requirement is the placement of bed units with direct access to the park, which is part of the investment.

The first floor of the building is, according to Žára, almost in an emergency state, with insufficient waterproofing of the lower part of the structure. The windows are original, do not seal, and many cannot be opened. There are high operational and energy demands. "The internal distributions, such as water, sewage, and inadequately sized electrical distributions, are almost in a state of emergency," stated Žára. The quality of the environment, according to him, has a direct impact on the success of treatment.

Of the total costs, 95 percent should be covered by the European Union, and the remaining five percent by the Ministry of Health. The clinic has about 1,300 hospitalized cases annually. The most common diagnoses, according to Žára, are depression, schizophrenia, stress and pressure situations, as well as eating disorders.
