The architectural studio ARCH.IC, working on the reconstruction of Protivín Castle, has revealed the color of the reconstructed facade: the new facade color will be a combination of gray and white, inspired by the Viennese architect Anton Erhard Martinelli. The renovated castle will serve as a facility for the members of the Royal Capital Club. In the eighteenth century, the facades of the castle were altered according to the designs of this significant Austrian architect, so we can say that with its new appearance, the castle is coming closer to the one it once had in the past. “Anton Erhard Martinelli was the princely court builder in the service of the Schwarzenbergs, and a large part of his projects for this aristocratic family is associated with the South Bohemian region. He realized, for example, the reconstruction of the mint at Český Krumlov Castle, the Baroque reconstruction of Hluboká Castle, alterations to the castle in Třeboň, and others. In addition, he worked for the Liechtensteins, Princess Althann Pignatelli, the Esterházy family, and other members of prominent Austrian aristocratic families, and not least, he worked directly for Emperor Charles VI. The Baroque facade of the České Budějovice Town Hall also originates from his design. With the color of the facade, we are restoring the castle to its original Baroque appearance and celebrating the art and aesthetics of Martinelli's solution,” said project manager THE ORB architect Věra Nagyová, adding: “We approached the choice of the facade's color combination very responsibly, as we realize that the castle located at the head of Masaryk Square in Protivín is a dominant feature of the town. I believe this is a positive change and that the castle will appear more elegant. Currently, we are also working on the overall concept and appearance of the area around the castle, which should complement the castle itself and clearly belong to it, just as it did in the past.” "The previous red-and-white color scheme of the facades of Protivín Castle corresponds to an alteration typical of Baroque buildings of the seventeenth century. Today's facade, however, dates back to the 1720s, and during that time this color combination was hardly used at all. For Prince Adam Franz of Schwarzenberg, it was designed by the Viennese architect Martinelli, who not only designed the reconstruction of the castle but also most of the buildings in the castle grounds. The gray and white color scheme is typical for his realizations,” added historian Martin Šanda, author of the lavish monograph Anton Erhard Martinelli in the Service of the Schwarzenbergs. Work on the castle's facades began in early autumn, mainly consisting of local repairs and cleaning of stone elements. As part of the revitalization of the roof structure and the replacement of the roofing, the skylights were adjusted and the basic parts of the chimneys were rebuilt. Currently, work on the facades has been halted due to winter and low temperatures – but will resume in the spring. “Protivín Castle is one of the most significant monuments in the South Bohemian region. In the past, there has been a loss of many valuable original structures and surfaces, so it is now necessary to seek solutions with the help of new materials. In the reconstruction, a sense of detail and craftsmanship is essential. The project documentation has been continuously consulted with the heritage conservation workers and has taken into account the results of conducted surveys,” stated a representative from the National Heritage Institute in České Budějovice, which oversees the reconstruction. “In 2022, we nearly completed the most demanding part of the work at the castle, which involves the revitalization and repair of the original structures. For example, we had to remove all the plaster and redo it entirely – after all, thirty years of disuse have taken their toll on the castle. It's worth mentioning the exchange of the purlins, which was very complicated. The greatest thanks go to everyone involved in the construction and those who care for its operation even in this challenging time for construction, when some materials are very difficult to obtain. Next year will focus on new elements, especially visible ones. Some parts of the complex will be, if all goes as planned, launched in trial operation next year, with further revitalizations to follow,” informed Věra Nagyová. Protivín Castle in southern Czech Republic has a history dating back to a Gothic castle, which belonged, among others, to the property of King and Emperor Charles IV. It will now become the first of the THE ORB project, a prestigious club Royal Capital Club, backed by royal and other significant families from all continents of the world.
