Prague - Developers sold 5,950 new apartments in Prague last year, which is a year-on-year increase of 18.6%. This is according to joint statistics from the companies Ekospol, Skanska Reality, and Trigema, which ČTK has at its disposal. This is the highest number in the last eight years. Sales surpassed even the pre-crisis year of 2007 when 5,356 new apartments were sold in the capital.
Interest in new apartments in Prague was also present in the last quarter of last year, when development companies sold 1,700 new apartments, which is a year-on-year increase of 9.6%. Developers have another 6,750 apartments ready for sale.
According to the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Ekospol, Evžen Korec, the increase in sales is proof of the recovery of the Czech economy. "There are more people who are not afraid to buy their own housing," noted Korec, adding that the rise in the number of sold apartments in Prague is also driven by record-low mortgages and a continuously replenished supply of so-called super-cheap apartments.
The CEO of Ekospol also expects sales growth this year. "We expect that given these favorable circumstances, there is room for healthy market growth of ten percent this year as well," claims Korec.
The market is mainly driven by large companies, as they sold almost half of the apartments last year.
The joint sales statistics have been published by three companies among the five largest developers since last spring. Until then, companies published sales data separately, but their figures often differed by dozens of apartments due to different methodologies.
