Hradec Králové - Workers today began construction of a new Czech post office at the highest peak in the Czech Republic, the 1602-meter high Sněžka. The modern building should be completed by August 10, when the traditional Svatovavřinecká pilgrimage will take place at the summit of the mountain. Pavel Klimeš from the construction company building the post office told ČTK today.
"We have approximately 75 percent of the necessary construction materials at Sněžka, it is possible to start building the basic structure of the object. About 15 people will now work on the construction," said Klimeš. The construction materials began to be transported to Sněžka gradually by cable car at the end of April; according to Klimeš, the entire construction consists of parts, so it is possible to transport glass panels or wooden parts as well.
The actual construction of the post office at Sněžka began in the summer of 2006 with the modification of the foundations of the original Czech hut, which created facilities for the operation of the future post office. The new modern building, designed by architects Martin Rajniš and Patrik Hoffman, will be constructed from wooden parts reinforced with steel rods, with a façade made of glass panels covered with wooden shutters. Tourists will find a viewing terrace in the building, information about the Krkonoš, post office services, and the possibility of refreshments.
The investor of the construction is Jaroslava Skrbková, the operator of the current post office, who committed to removing the original post office at the summit of Sněžka. According to the original plans, the post office was supposed to be completed by the summit of Sněžka already, for example, in 2006, the builders were missing some metal parts necessary to assemble the entire structure, and there was a risk that the construction would not be completed before the arrival of winter weather.
The post office will stand on the site of the dilapidated Czech hut, which has been closed since 1990 due to the discharge of contaminated wastewater. In 2004, the hut, which was built in 1868 and gradually expanded, was demolished.
