Prague – The Czech National Bank will issue a commemorative silver two-hundred-crown coin on Wednesday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of architect Jože Plečnik. A total of 17,100 coins will be available. The coin's design was created by Vojtěch Dostál. The Czech National Bank announced this in a press release today.
The nominal value of the coin is not the same as the sale price, which is higher and takes into account, among other things, the current price of silver, manufacturing costs, and VAT. The coin can be purchased from selected contractual partners. For example, on the website of the Czech Mint, the price of the coin in standard quality is 690 crowns.
The coins will be available in two versions, differing in surface finish and edge treatment. In premium quality, characterized by a highly polished coin field, a matte relief, and a smooth edge, the Czech National Bank will issue 11,200 coins. An additional 5,900 coins will be offered by the Czech National Bank in standard quality with a milled edge.
World-renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik was born on January 23, 1872, in Ljubljana. After his studies, he initially worked in Vienna, then moved to Prague, where he designed and taught until the early 1920s. At the end of 1920, he was appointed professor of architecture at the newly established university in Ljubljana. Shortly after the founding of Czechoslovakia, he accepted the offer from President Tomáš Garrique Masaryk to make Prague Castle and its gardens a dignified residence for the head of a democratic state. After several modifications initiated by Plečnik, Prague Castle still bears the architect's mark today. In the late 1930s, Plečnik designed the modern Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Prague, which became a landmark of Jiří z Poděbrady Square. Plečnik died in January 1957 in Ljubljana; in 1997, he was posthumously awarded one of the highest honors of the Czech Republic, the TGM Order of the I class.
Another commemorative silver coin from the emission plan for the period 2021–2025, which will be presented to the public by the Czech National Bank in June, will be a five-hundred-crown coin featuring the motif of the Jawa 250 motorcycle from the thematic cycle "Famous Means of Transport."
