Prague - Prague wants to change and unify the appearance of stalls in Wenceslas Square. It will select from several modern glass designs prepared by an architectural studio. The new stalls could improve the look of the square as early as the beginning of next year, said Aleksandra Udženija (ODS), the city councilor for property, to ČTK.
The best of the designs from Cigler Marani Architects will be chosen by a council commission. Its members will discuss specific locations for the stalls, how many there will be, and what kinds of goods they will offer in June. The prepared material will then be submitted for approval to the city council. The first stalls could appear in the square in January.
Vendors who will have stalls rented, according to the city hall's plans, should focus on selling flowers, pastries, newspapers, and tobacco. The traditional assortment of refreshments will also remain, particularly the popular sausages. "We want to return the atmosphere to this place," Udženija told ČTK. "It will be a place for rest, but also a place that is ideal for various cultural and social events," she added.
The replacement of the stalls is related to the overall renovation of the square that Prague has been preparing for several years. The project includes, among other things, the expansion of greenery, traffic restrictions, more space for pedestrians, and the renewal of the tram line. The first step towards the square's renewal is, according to the councilor, the closure of the lower part to motor vehicle traffic. The city hall also recently commissioned a change to the zoning plan that will allow trams to return to Wenceslas Square.
Wenceslas Square, which is popular with tourists, has not had a very good reputation in recent years. Civic associations and Prague residents often point out the large number of cars, litter, drug dealing, and prostitution.
