Cheb - The city of Cheb will withdraw from the intention to completely reconstruct the historical granary in the city center. From the project, which was estimated to cost around 50 million crowns, it will only allocate a part that pertains to the buildings of Špalíček in King George of Poděbrady Square. However, its repairs are also expected to be cheaper than the original project anticipated. This was stated to reporters today by the Deputy Mayor of Cheb, Michal Pospíšil (ODS).

"The council at its meeting abandoned the application for a grant for the project to renovate the granary and Špalíček for about 50 million crowns. We have reached the conclusion, after thorough analysis and inspection, that the granary building is already prepared for holding workshops and other activities that would promote Cheb's trusses," stated Pospíšil. The granary houses a set of replicas of historical trusses made by carpenter Josef Hauer from German Parkstein.

The Cheb Creative Center project involved a complete reconstruction and the creation of modern facilities in the building of the Franciscan granary with the aim of promoting and concentrating activities related to the unique collection of Cheb's trusses, which is among the most significant in Europe in its entirety. It captures the development of trusses from the Middle Ages to the present day, in functional houses in a relatively small area around the historic center. The city wants to make only minor adjustments to the granary and primarily build appropriate social facilities there.

In Špalíček, which is a collection of eleven originally Gothic houses, the city also wants to save costs. The original project anticipated an investment of about 13 million crowns for its repairs. The current city leadership aims to reduce costs to around eight million crowns. This year, the empty spaces, where the municipal police was located more than ten years ago, will mainly see repairs to the electrical installations and possibly other utilities. In the following year, construction work is expected to take place. The renovated spaces could then serve, for example, as offices either for the needs of the city office or for other interested parties in these exclusive but spatially limited areas in the historical building.
