Cheb - A significant transformation of the public space in Cheb is expected in the coming years, for example, through the extension of the city library. However, the city also wants to make the city walls more accessible to the public or repair the Dominican monastery, Cheb mayor Petr Navrátil (ČSSD) said today to ČTK during the conference of the Association of Historical Sites and Towns of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. Experts are discussing topics such as cycling transportation, parking, and other issues related to the solution of public space in historical towns. By organizing the conference, Cheb followed up on its victory in the Historic Town of the Year 2014 competition.

"In the future, we will need to address the space in front of the library. I hope that the construction of the library will completely shift the perception of the entire area of the castle moat, which is only rarely visited. I hope that the conference will show, for example, how to make the city walls more accessible, because that is a forgotten part of the history of our town. And even though we can look at the walls, no one can really get to them, except for the parts that are on the castle," said Navrátil.
Cheb, as the host of the conference, will mainly offer inspiration to other towns and institutions. "Many mayors I've met envy Cheb for its pedestrian zone or possibly the greenery that connects to the historic core or is directly in the historic core. Whether they look into the monastery garden, under the castle, or at the floral decorations in the square. I believe greenery also belongs to the historic part," Navrátil reminded of the most significant advantages of the town. Experts from Cheb will give lectures at the conference, particularly on the successful project of the pedestrian zone, as well as on cultural events and art in the historical center of the town. The conference on the topic of public space in historical towns will last until Saturday.
