Český Krumlov - The Český Krumlov Town Hall, together with the castle administration, will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the inscription of the town on the UNESCO World Heritage list this year through a series of programs. All significant events taking place here from June will commemorate this anniversary, said Jitka Zikmundová, the deputy mayor, to ČTK. The town will be enlivened by concerts, exhibitions, meetings of experts, and a unique winter baroque night. The historic center of the town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage list by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on December 4, 1992. In the same year, Prague and Telč were added to the list, followed by other places and towns, so there are now a total of 12 in the Czech Republic. “In tourism, UNESCO works well; it’s a good marketing brand,” summarized the deputy mayor, who stated that the inscription brought a clear advantage in promotion, as Krumlov has become an exceptional place on the map of Europe. Together with the state castle and chateau, the Český Krumlov Development Fund, and other partners, the town hall is preparing a series of events for experts and the public. The updated and supplemented program can be found on the website www.ckrumlov.cz/unesco. “It is such a significant anniversary that we want to commemorate it throughout the year,” added Zikmundová. Krumlov will collaborate with both Czech partners within UNESCO and foreign colleagues. “A presentation of the Croatian Dubrovnik is planned, and the Krumlov representatives should travel to the Italian San Gimignano. Friendly contacts with Kuressaare in Estonia, which is applying for a nomination to the World Heritage list, are also ongoing,” specified town hall spokesperson Jana Zuziaková. Prestigious music festivals traditionally held in Krumlov during the summer will dedicate some concerts to this anniversary. For example, as part of the Chamber Music Festival, there will be a concert entitled Josef Suk and His Friends on July 5. Museums and galleries will also participate in the program. The Regional Museum and the Museum of Building History and Crafts are preparing special tours from autumn to December. The Egon Schiele Art Center plans an international symposium titled Krumlov 100 Years After Schiele and an exhibition celebrating the 15th anniversary of UNESCO in the Czech Republic and Krumlov. In November, the members of the General Assembly of the Czech UNESCO Heritage Association will meet in this town. “The highlight of the meeting will be a baroque night, during which we are negotiating the possibility of baroque illuminating the entire town and offering this spectacle to all residents and visitors,” added Zikmundová. There will also be special tours of the historical core and the castle area with expert commentary. The program will culminate on December 4, the day of Krumlov's inscription on the UNESCO list. “We envisioned it as a day for young people; students in primary and secondary schools are currently working on this theme in literary and artistic forms,” stated the deputy mayor. In the final celebration, the results of the competition for children and students, UNESCO for Children, will be announced, and an international concert by the Český Krumlov Elementary Art School entitled Children for UNESCO will take place in the Riding Hall.
