Brno - Brno plans to renovate the Měnínská Brána with an estimated cost of 42 million crowns. The last renovation was about 50 years ago, said Brno's mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) in a press release. According to her, the structure is in poor condition. Měnínská Brána is the only preserved city gate. Its current appearance comes from around the year 1500.
Brno's councilors have selected a designer who will propose the necessary modifications for 1.4 million. "The historic building is struggling with high humidity, leaky sewage, and generally poor state of technical installations; a more substantial renovation of the elevator shaft is also planned," Vaňková stated.
According to her, Měnínská Brána will once again serve as an exhibition space, just like in the past. "But it will gain a new, modern content, which will include, for example, 3D virtual reality," Vaňková added.
Měnínská Brána is the only preserved gate out of five that provided access to the city. Its significance, according to the city, began to decline after the Thirty Years' War, and it stopped serving as a passage in the mid-19th century. It came under the city's ownership in the late 1970s and was subsequently renovated according to a project by architect Kamil Fuchs, son of Bohuslav Fuchs.
It was then put under the management of the City Museum of Brno, which began using it as an exhibition space. It has hosted both long-term exhibitions and short-term displays. In the future, a permanent multimedia exhibition documenting the development of the fortifications of Brno is planned. This exhibition will be followed by short-term displays, such as historical weapons or military techniques.
