Brno - The park on Roosevelt Street in Brno may take on a new form. In a competition organized by the Brno-střed district, the design by architect Jiří Vokřál's team won. The plan involves completing the disjointed block of buildings in the southern part of the park, where a city house will be created. A new path will cut through the space between the Governors' Palace and Janáček Theatre, and the old trees will remain untouched, city representatives said at a press conference today.
The winning project will serve as a basis for decisions on the future of the park and its surroundings, potentially even for a change in the zoning plan. “We devoted a large amount of space to considering the impact on greenery. Some proposals intruded into the root systems of the trees,” said the deputy mayor of the Brno-střed district, Jasna Flamiková (SZ), who was on the jury. She emphasized the importance of greenery in reducing summer heat and added that the district wants to preserve the trees during the park's reconstruction.
According to the proposal, terraces for summer gardens and open seating, water lines, rows of trees, and strips of perennials could be created in the park. Pedestrian paths will also be slightly modified. “We propose a path that winds freely through the park and connects important places in the park, namely its northern and southern parts and the forecourt of the Moravian Gallery,” stated Vokřál.
The path will line elements in the park, such as the sculpture of Jiří Mahen and a memorial tree. The architects hope that additional works of art could be exhibited along it. “The area also contains significant archaeological finds, as the city walls ran through here. The covered entrance to the Běhounská Gate is located in the park,” added the author of the competition brief, Petr Bořecký (ANO).
City representatives do not yet know the specific date for the start of the work, and the final shape of the park may still change. First, they will submit a proposal for a change in the regulatory plan so that construction completion of the block in the southern part of the park can begin. A new city house will be built there, with restaurants and shops on the ground floor and apartments, studios, or offices above.
The competition for the conceptual design of the park was announced by the Brno-střed city hall last autumn, and the jury convened at the end of February. The winning project team received 210,000 crowns.
