Brno - The streets of Brno have come alive today with sculptures and installations by 14 artists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Germany. The exhibition "Sculptures in the Streets" is being held in Brno for the second time, aiming to bring artworks from stone buildings among the people and beautify public spaces. One of the most interesting attractions by artist Magdalena Jetelová appeared at the Avion hotel. The giant red inflatable sacks are meant to create the illusion that the functionalist building in the city center is breathing with lungs like a living creature. The festival will run until August 30. Among other exhibits are, for example, a wooden sculpture of a horse hanging above the passage leading to the Old Town Hall, or a flock of cast iron sheep on the roof of the House of Art at Malinovské Square. The massive stones in Freedom Square also remind us of the footprint of the demolished Gothic Church of St. Nicholas. The inaugural year of the festival took place in Brno last year and according to the organizers, it was well received. Originally a month-long event, this year it has been extended to three months. In the coming years, the frequency of the exhibition may possibly change to a biennial or triennial format. "If we can maintain the interest of politicians in financing, we can build an event of Central European significance," stated the director of the House of Art of the city of Brno, Rostislav Koryčánek. This year, due to a limited budget, the organizers abandoned the original plan to invite more foreign artists. They have to raise funds for the production of their works themselves, while the city will contribute approximately 25,000 korunas for their installation. This year, the festival also features a newly added accompanying program. The goal of the lectures and guided tours by curators is primarily to assist people in understanding the exhibited works. The so-called Art Containers, in which exhibitions and concerts will take place, are intended for young artists and students of art schools.
