Henning Larsen

Copenhagen - Renowned Danish architect Henning Larsen has passed away in Copenhagen at the age of 87. This was reported today by the DPA agency. Among his latest projects was the Harpa concert hall in the Reykjavik harbor, for which he, along with his Icelandic colleagues, received one of the most prestigious awards in European architecture this year - the Mies van der Rohe Award.
Larsen's architectural firm announced today that the architect peacefully passed away at his home in Copenhagen on Saturday.
"Denmark has lost not only an internationally recognized architect but also an inspirer and mentor to many generations of Danish architects," stated the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences.
Larsen was regarded as one of the leading Scandinavian architects and as the "master of light." His works, according to DPA, exhibited a Nordic lightness combined with a harmony of light and space.
Larsen was involved in numerous buildings not only in Scandinavia. The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Riyadh is considered a groundbreaking work, bringing him international recognition in 1984. Other significant projects include the municipal library in Malmö, southern Sweden, and a residential building on the coast of the Danish city of Vejle, inspired by waves.
