Mexico - Mexican President Felipe Calderón officially opened the Baluarte Bridge on Thursday, which is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the highest in the world. It spans a valley in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range at a height of 402.57 meters (the height of the deck above the lowest point of the terrain) and is part of a highway that traverses one of the toughest terrains in Mexico.
The cable-stayed bridge is so high that the Eiffel Tower could fit beneath it, and it is 1124 meters long. "This project will connect people in northern Mexico like never before," said Calderón during the bridge opening. Representatives from the Guinness World Records were also present to present him with recognition for the extraordinary technical achievement.
The opening of the bridge is part of the events commemorating Mexico's 200th anniversary of independence from Spain. Traffic on it will begin later, and authorities expect this new route to boost tourism and trade in the area.
The highway between Mazatlán on the Pacific coast and the inland town of Durango will replace the notorious and dangerous road winding through the mountainous terrain of the Sierra Madre Occidental, known as the Devil's Backbone. In addition to the Baluarte Bridge, there will be eight more bridges along the route exceeding 300 meters in height, as well as 60 tunnels. The journey between Mazatlán and Durango is expected to be shortened by six hours.
The highway is set to be gradually completed and will eventually connect both coasts of Mexico.
The highest bridge by deck height (343 meters) remains the Millau Viaduct in France.
