Almaty - The largest mosque in Central Asia was opened today in Kazakhstan's capital, Almaty. It is crowned by a central dome that is 51 meters high. According to the AP agency, the entire structure covers an area of 1.75 hectares.

The construction of the mosque was not without problems. Half a year before its opening, it was damaged by a fire that claimed the life of one worker. According to rescuers, the January incident was likely caused by careless welding, which ignited scaffolding under the central dome.
Of the 15 million residents of Kazakhstan, a former Soviet republic, about 70 percent are Muslims. The festive opening of the mosque was attended by the country's president, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
