The influential real estate mogul placed his name towering two stories above street level in the central part of the city, which immediately drew criticism from experts.
"If it were in Atlantic City or Las Vegas, no one would care. But this is in Chicago, and it’s in that part of Chicago that is full of great buildings from the twenties to sixties and beyond,” said architecture critic and Pulitzer Prize winner Blair Kamin of the Chicago Tribune. According to him, no other high-rise building in the city has a similar sign.
According to the AP, several skyscrapers in the city have large signs near the entrance or just above ground level. Only the Trump International Hotel & Tower has such a large sign and at that height.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who is nicknamed "Rahmbo" for his combative approach to public issues, intends to defend the architectural standard of the city and is reportedly seeking a legal way to remove the sign. "Mayor Emanuel believes that it is an architecturally tasteful building marred by an architecturally tasteless sign,” said his spokeswoman Kelley Quinn.
However, Trump refuses to heed the mayor's and experts' opinions, stating that the sign in its current form was approved by city authorities. The wealthy businessman, who employs many Chicago residents and is an important investor here, was reportedly surprised that people are bothered by the sight of his name when they should be grateful to him.
