Competition projects for the ArtA cultural center in Arnhem

The Eastern Dutch city of Arnhem organized a requested architectural competition for a new cultural center that would replace the existing three-story apartment buildings and connect the historic center of the city with the Rhine waterfront. The newly proposed ArtA building aims to combine a museum with a cinema hall.
The city hall requested proposals from a quartet of renowned studios: BIG (Copenhagen), Herman Hertzberger (Amsterdam), Kengo Kuma (Tokyo), and NL Architects (Amsterdam). The shape and orientation of the site did not allow for the individual designs to differ too much from one another. All linear forms attempt to accommodate the dense construction program while also opening up as much as possible towards the street and the river.
The jury will decide on the winning design at the end of March 2014. Construction of the cultural center will begin no earlier than 2018.
