Today marks the commencement of the 2nd year of the international and interdisciplinary conference titled "Senses in Architecture, Urban Landscaping, and Design" – SAUL 2020, organized by the Faculty of Humanities at the Silesian University in Katowice, the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, the Society of Polish Urban Planners, the Association (TUP) for Silesia, and the Association of Architects of the Republic of Poland (SARP) in Katowice. The first year of the conference, held in 2018, focused on the role of human sensibility in the processes of educating architects. Participants at that time rightly pointed out the shortcomings of the current education model, which primarily focuses on the artistic and technical aspects of the profession. The ongoing year will address topics related to environmental behavior, and the conference organizers expect that current discussions will focus on issues of perception, both of lower and higher orders. In the case of the former, it should concern evolutionarily conditioned processing of sensory stimuli, while the latter should encompass not only the abilities to gather information but also aspects of understanding acquired or conscious experiences, often culturally defined. Knowledge in this area is now deemed essential for representatives of all fields involved in the design process, aimed at adapting and modernizing environments built with regard to human demands and needs, as well as ecological challenges. Participants and observers of the conference are warmly invited, including theorists of architecture, practicing architects, and representatives of related professions. The official language of the conference is English. The conference is being held online from September 26 to 28, 2020. Participation in the event is free of charge. Organizational details and individual thematic blocks are available on the website. The Architecture Cabinet is the sole partner of this international conference representing the Czech Republic and is pleased to note that from its initiative, a number of personalities have accepted invitations to participate in this event, including Odile Decq from France, Rafi Segal from the USA, CHIU Chen-Yu (CHO) from Taiwan, Josep Ferrando from Spain, Niall McCullough and Ruth O'Herlihy from Ireland, and last but not least Zdeňka Němcová Zedníčková from Liberec, with whom I have had the opportunity to collaborate successfully over the long term.
